Brewing news UK: London's oldest brewery, Young's, will end a more than 400-year-old brewing tradition this week

Brewing since 1581, London's oldest brewery, Young's, will end a more than 400-year-old brewing tradition this week when it finishes bottling beer on its Wandsworth site, BBC news commented on September 25.

Young's stops bottling its beers at the Ram Brewery on Friday. The site will be used as a distribution depot before being sold to developers in 2007. On the same day, the company's chairman, John Young, will be buried. He died last week, aged 85.

Young's said many of the 90 workers affected have been found other jobs.

Young's decided to merge its brewing operations with Charles Wells. Under the takeover deal, Young's is moving its brewing operations to Wells' more modern brewery in Bedfordshire.

Brewing began on the Ram site in Wandsworth in 1581, making it the oldest site in the UK where beer has been continuously produced. Young's bought the site when it was founded in 1831.

The last beer was brewed at the site last week, spokesman Michael Hardman said. "Some of the staff are going to the Bedford site, where all the beer will be brewed. Some will be found other jobs. Others have been offered redundancy," he said. "It will be quite poignant on Friday because that is the day out chairman will be buried," he said. The site is expected to be developed into a mix of shops and homes.

"The decision to sell the Ram Brewery site in our 175th year was taken with some reluctance, for mainly nostalgic reasons, but as I promised when we first announced that we were launching the brewing review in 2003, my head has ruled my heart," the late John Young said earlier this year.

Real Ale group Camra said in May it was "greatly disappointed" at the closure of the London site.

All of Young's beers - which include the Waggle Dance and Winter Warmer names - will be brewed at the Bedford site, alongside Charles Wells brands such as Bombardier bitter and John Bull.
